Aspect ratio
The proportion between an image's width and height — 1:1 square, 16:9 widescreen, 4:5 portrait, and so on. Most image tools let you choose it (or accept a resolution), and it changes what composition even makes sense: a wide shot tells a different story than a tall one. Choosing the ratio first prevents re-framing everything later.
